The North Rockland Youth Police Academy is a collaborative effort of the Town Stony Point Police Department and the Town of Haverstraw Police Department and is partially funded by a grant awarded through the Rockland County Youth Bureau and the North Rockland Coalition for Drug Awareness and Prevention in partnership with the North Rockland Central School District. Its purpose is to expose young adults, ages 14 through 18, to the requirements, duties, drawbacks, and rewards of a law enforcement career.
Participants attend training one night per week for ten weeks. Instructors, who are police officers selected for their expertise in various fields, offer the cadets a perspective of the law enforcement and emergency services profession, the opportunity to experience some of the training that a law enforcement officer receives and gives the cadet an inside look at the operations of a police department. Topics such as; emergency first aid, defensive tactics, vehicle and traffic stops, court room testimony are covered.
At the conclusion of academy it is our hope that the cadet will have a better understanding and appreciation for the law enforcement profession and possibly consider it as a potential career.
